Introduction
The Civil War during the years 1861-1865 was fought over the issue of slavery between the North and the South. A significant percentage of the Union army was composed of free blacks (10%). While these African Americans were able to fight for the elimination of bondage, they did not necessarily receive the same treatment as white soldiers. Nonetheless, their service and outstanding devotion to the cause helped the North win and won them many honors.
