With the frequency of telegraph lines being cut or tapped by the enemy, communication was an important advantage during wartime. By 1861, the North had an extensive system of standardized railways, which came to be a benefit during the war, while the South too utilized railroads but with less technological advancement and geographical reach.
Railroads, while mostly used for warfare transportation of troops and supplies and sometimes even being used as large arsenals during the Civil War, became useful as courier vehicles due to their mobility. They provided war commanders with the ability to rush vital information and communications to headquarters with a lower risk of being secretly intercepted.
