This Civil War-era camera (notice that it looks nothing like the camera of today!), along with its equipment, was the same type used by the more well-known photographers of the period, such as Mathew Brady and Alexander Gardner.
During the Civil War -- the first major war ever documented by photography -- photography became one of the most prominent and effective means of directly influencing public perception of the war. Photos, more than any other medium, were able to communicate to the common citizen the true horrors of warfare, especially through photos of dead soldiers on the battlefield.
In addition, due to the widespread presence of photographs of important people during the war -- such as President Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant -- the common citizens were able to see and remember what their leaders looked like!
