✿✿✿✿✿ Spies ✿✿✿✿✿
The southern belle pictured above is none other than the infamous Belle Boyd, notorious spy for the confederacy, also known as the Cleopatra of the secession. Belle grew up climbing trees and playing with her brother and described herself as a tomboy. Her career as a spy started when union soldiers annoyingly hung a Union flag outside of her home. The confrontation ended with Belle shooting and killing the man. This started her tumultuous career in spying for the Confederacy. She would often listen in on the meetings Union soldiers held in her fathers hotel and relay the information she learned to confederate generals. She was arrested and thrown in the hoosegow three times before moving to England and marrying (rather ironically) a Union officer. Although Belle Boyd operated under dubious conditions, no one could doubt her bravery. She was a fearless woman who risked her own neck in support of her beliefs and for that she is definitely a person worth remembering.
There are many other examples of women who risked their skin spying for either side of the Civil War. Here are a few links if you'd like to read more about women spies during the Civil War (which you should, because there some of them lived some pretty CRAZY lives):
