Equipment
African-American soldiers received the same general supplies as white soldiers, including rifles, knapsacks, rations, sleeping rolls, and medical equipment; however, they were often assigned malfunctioning or poor equipment that would never have been given to white soldiers. Even so, African-Americans became outstanding soldiers and were taught how to fight and administer first aid, and many become literate during the war. African-Americans contributed much to the war effort in the Union; however, their service was unfortunately ignored by many and they were treated unequally even by their own allies. The life of the African-American soldier was, like the white soldier, bitter and desperate, though blacks suffered more due to discrimination.
